Weel Masters Wimmera Wingless Battle

Simpson teenager Luke Weel claimed his second Parr Motorsports Super Six Series victory of the season in Saturday night’s final round at Blue Ribbon Raceway in Horsham.

While it was Weel who was victorious on the night, overall honours went the way of Winchelsea’s Phil Micallef, who capped off a consistent series with a fourth place finish in the closing event.

A slick, one-lane racetrack was harsh on tyres as cars fought for position on the pole line in the opening of an all-in 20 car, 20-lap feature event. High points man Lee Meade got the best of the start, while fellow front row occupant Micallef was shuffled back as far as fifth during the early going.

Meade paced the field during the opening laps before Weel made his move and set off with the lead. It was Meade who held down the second for three quarters of the race before running wide out of a turn and was freight trained underneath by Bradley Warren, Mark Walsh and Micallef.

In a green to chequer event, Weel took the win from Warren and Walsh, while Micallef crossed the line in fourth followed by Lee Meade, while Damien Meade put in a solid performance for sixth. Seventh went to Sam Wren ahead of Allansford’s Gary Bell, Andy Hibbert and Andy Caruana rounding out the top ten. Steve Hodder and South Australian Adam Sealey were next across the line, with Dan Dubois and Jye Saunders the final cars to remain on the lead lap. Rookie Greg Atkins was next home, followed by former Super Rod ace Greg Cockayne, Steve Munzel, Gary McCallum, Mick Rigby and Ray Klemm.

Heat race wins on the night went to Weel, Dubois, Warren and Walsh.

The top ten in series points was shuffled dramatically following the final round with many drivers making headway.
